A History of Jazz in America
Published in Hardcover by DaCapo Press (December, 1972)
Average review score:

Still the Quintessential Jazz PrimerI've read many books on Jazz, but none have surpassed Ulanov's thorough yet very readable account of American Jazz history. They layout of the book from the opening chapter entitled "What is Jazz?" through the last chapter entitled "Evaluation" is full of seminal Jazz figures, listed in a cohesive chronological manner. Ulanov not only provides the reader with an evenly tempered insight on the subject of American Jazz, but the book contains a vast array of many of the artists triumphs, tragedies, and other interesting information. Written in 1952 it covers American Jazz from its inception through the beginnings of Cool Jazz. If you really want to improve your understanding of American Jazz and its history. This is the place to start.

Isaac Asimov's History of I-Botics: An Illustrated Novel
Published in Hardcover by Harper Prism (August, 1997)
Average review score:

Issac Asimov: Lord of RobotsI bought this book on a whim, and man was I glad I did, it is superb! The book is split up into four different stories which all focus on I-Bots, the first examples of artificial intelligence. The first story begins by chronicling the life of an American spy in WW2 Germany then rockets to the near future, and leap frogs again to many points in bettwen. The book is fully illustrated with wonderfull artwork, that trully matches Asimov's genius. If you are at all interensted in robotics, or are just looking for a good book to read, buy The History of I-Botics, you won't be dissapointed. Peace.

The Jazz Book: From Ragtime to Fusion and Beyond
Published in Paperback by Lawrence Hill Books (October, 1982)
Average review score:

Classic introduction to jazzJoachim Berendt first published this work in German in 1953. Many editions and revisions later, this has become one of the cornerstones of jazz historical criticism. It has been translated into many languages, reflecting the universal appeal of the work. A clandestine Russian edition appeared in the former Soviet Union, and in Japan alone it has been edited three times. The Jazz Book is possibly the clearest, most didactic work of its kind. It's the first book I read about jazz and it made me appreciate the whole picture. It helped me to make the connections between musicians, works, instruments, ideas, styles, movements and influences. It's an invaluable introduction to jazz; it is written with great affection for the music, and translated very elegantly. It appears to have "fallen off" most current jazz reading lists, perhaps because there are newer, trendier writers addressing a modern, demanding, informed audience. But it's still a starting point that knows no rival.

Jazz, Its Evolution and Essence
Published in Hardcover by DaCapo Press (March, 1975)
Average review score:

An excellent analytical guide to jazzThis book is an overlooked masterpiece of jazz writing. While
most authors dealing with jazz reduce it to cliches about
personalities and vague notions about improvisation, Hodeir
provides a lucid, detailed musical analysis of the major
jazz innovators. Especially impressive is his work on Charlie
Parker. In a single chapter, Hodeir provides more insight
on Parker than all of the existing jazz literature combined.
Of course, the book is not without its problems. Hodeir
occasionally adopts the language and tone of French academic
philosophers (he is quite reminicent of the phenomenologists).
This may be off putting to some readers. However, fortunately
this intellectual superstructure does not stand in the way
of this very lucid, illuminating book. It is extremely
unfortunate that this book is out of print.
